Three Tips to Keep Your Child’s Teeth Sparkling During the Summer

Summertime offers a nice break from the books. But that doesn’t mean it is time to forget about proper dental hygiene, especially for our little heroes.

While we know you keep track of your child’s oral health, it can take a back seat—literally—during the summer months when family road trips and vacations take place. While school is out all across the Rio Grande Valley and Laredo, your team at Little Heroes Dentistry would like to remind parents that now is the perfect time to bring in your child for a check-up.

We’d also like to share three tips that can help your children keep their smiles bright all summer long.

1. Whether traveling out of town or spending the night at a friend’s house, your little hero always needs their toothbrush.

Summer is the time for your children to have fun. But just because it’s vacation doesn’t mean that they get to slack on their responsibilities.

In the U.S., 23 percent of children ages 2 through 11 have untreated cavities. This means that keeping a regular oral care routine is especially important for your child to keep their teeth healthy. Whether traveling or just spending a few days at a friend’s or relative’s house, you’ll want to pack your child a tube of toothpaste, some floss, and a brand new toothbrush with their favorite character.

Because of the fun they may be having away from home, your child may simply forget about their responsibilities. A text reminder before bed can help them keep track of their dental hygiene habits while on a family road trip or sleepover.

2. Summer is the time to double down on dental hygiene.

For many families, there tends to be enough downtime during the summer to schedule a dental check-up.

An early check-up in the summer season is crucial for identifying problematic areas and creating a treatment plan. The best time to make an appointment with our dentists near you would be right after school lets out for summer. Whether it’s getting treatment for a cavity, putting on braces, or just a regular check-up, early is best.

As time passes and the new school year rolls around, scheduling an appointment becomes more difficult because there is more competition for the time slots, a.k.a. the August rush.

3. Develop a healthy diet.

During summer, parents tend to be a little easy going when it comes to routines and foods. Especially when out on the road. Fruits and veggies aren’t usually the first choice on a vacation trip and instead sweets, jellies, gummies, and other types of candy become the go-to option.

But parents really have to be careful. Our Little Heroes dentists want to make sure that your children are eating healthy. This can mean cutting back on those sodas you packed into your grocery cart as well as putting those candies and treats back on the shelves.

Believe us, there are plenty of fun – but healthy – summer snacks that your children are sure to enjoy. And they include fresh fruits, veggies, and other healthy foods.

Reach out to Little Heroes Dentistry today to schedule a dental check-up and avoid the “August Rush”.

At Little Heroes Dentistry, we want our parents to schedule their children’s appointments early in the summer so that the whole family can truly enjoy the rest of their summer months knowing that they have one less thing to take care of.
